PROS AND CONS OF A POMSKY

The Pros

There are many pros to owning a pomsky. They have all of the beauty, personality, and athletic grace of a full-size husky but in a slightly smaller (or much smaller), more manageable package! They are family-friendly, great with children, cats, other dogs and make fantastic partners for outdoor adventures such as hiking or fun on the water! Pomskies are popular because, for some, they are a non-traditional, “better” alternative to the husky breed not only for their size, but more variety in temperaments, colors, and usually have lower care costs due to their sizes. Many are affectionate & retain the ‘lap dog’ trait from their Pomeranian side. They are extremely intelligent and often have memorable personalities. When you meet a pomsky’s needs, they give you the world in return.

The Cons

Like any breed, there are some cons that people should be aware of when it comes to pomskies. The cons are that it’s a relatively new breed (circa 2012) and so the breed standards are still young and in development by kennel clubs. This makes it harder to predict certain traits or structural aspects, which is why it is important to choose ethical breeders, especially ones that health test and have goals/guidelines. Also be sure to learn about the parents as much as possible. If you are wanting a low or non-shedding dog, a Pomsky is not for you. While their grooming needs are very easy, they definitely shed. The woolier they are in coat type, the more often you will need to comb them to prevent matting. Pomskies are also not ideal for the “lazier” or non-active families, as they are happiest when they have someone who plays with them, takes them on walks or includes them on drives or family outings. Essentially, they are lap-dogs that need a little exercise too. Pomskies are not usually yappy, but can inherit that iconic and goofy “husky-talk” when they play. Many, but not all, love to dig- something to be aware of for the gardeners out there. While both Poms and Huskies are both Spitz breeds with common ancestry and purposeful origins… you have to also consider that cosmetic defects can occur when combining two different sizes, such as the muzzle lengths which can manifest as an underbite for example. Every breed, including purebreds, have their potential risks for defects, as do all living creatures but make sure the ones associated with pomskies are okay with you, should they occur- and also make sure you understand the health guarantee(s) of whichever breeder you choose.
